Mardol Papaya Salmonella

16 states have suffered from the salmonella outbreak caused by Mardol papayas from Mexico. The Food and Drug Administration advises Americans to avoid purchasing or keeping any papayas from the Caribeña brand, which is potentially responsible for the outbreak.

Over 100 people are hospitalized for salmonella caused by these infected papayas, including one death. The Caribeña brand has recall all its papayas in the market, as they were linked to cases associated with Salmonella Thompson and Salmonella Kariuma.

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella affects anyone at any age and is extremely dangerous when not treated immediately. Unfortunately, there are still signs of infected papayas circulating within the United States. Consumers should be aware of the following signs of salmonella:

1. Skin Rash

A common sign of salmonella is skin rashes. Furthermore, during the second week, rose-colored patches and spots may start to appear. Additionally, people who are infected with salmonella will experience these rashes mostly on their abdomen or lower chest following with a typhoid fever.

Contact a dermatologist immediately if you are suspicious of any skin rash.

2. Vomiting / Diarrhea

One of the first and most obvious signs of salmonella is when people start to experience diarrhea or vomiting. Ultimately when the body consumes these contaminated foods, it will start to reject the bacteria through intense vomiting or diarrhea. For some people, it only lasts for a few days without needing any treatment.

3. Headaches / Fever

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that those who are reported infected have experienced fevers and headaches. People typically experience these symptoms within 12 to 72 hours upon eating the papayas.

Overall, most people are able to recover from salmonella without treatment within a few days or weeks. However, if you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms of salmonella, its important to seek medical attention immediately.
