Profhilo – the new anti-aging treatment?

by | Dec 20, 2021 | Blog, Cosmetic

Injectables such as botox and dermal fillers are creeping more into mainstream. But have you heard of the latest anti-ageing injectable trend ‘Profhilo’?

Profhilo is an aesthetic treatment termed as “first of its kind”. Much like dermal filler, it is composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) and is injected as a gel via a needle. Once injected, it stimulates skin cell receptors to improve skin quality by restoring hydration and promoting radiance. As well as boosting the skin, it also triggers a response known as “bio-remodelling” which improves ageing and sagging tissue by smoothing and tightening the skin. Most commonly, Profhilo is injected into the face, neck, hands and other areas with high skin laxity. The treatment is suitable for both men and women and can be given to adults of all ages.

How does Profhilo work?:

As mentioned earlier, Profhilo induces a bio-remodelling response. This is a process that causes the skin to create more collagen and elastin – two compounds that naturally decrease as we age. As more collagen and elastin production is stimulated, more water is attracted within the deeper layers of the skin. This results in significant tissue improvement as tightening and lifting are encouraged and the appearance of lines and wrinkles are reduced.

Profhilo uses an incredibly pure form of hyaluronic acid which is a lot runnier than the HA used in dermal fillers. Once injected into the upper layers of the skin, the HA will disperse effortlessly and begin acting as a scaffold on the tissues to start the bio-remodelling process.

Does Profhilo have Side Effects?:

One of the most frequently asked questions about the treatment is whether it is safe. Fortunately, hyaluronic acid is biocompatible which means that it is well-tolerated by the human body. Our bodies naturally produce hyaluronic acid anyway, so injecting higher amounts of the substance will rarely trigger harmful side effects. To add to this, it is also highly unlikely that a client will experience an allergic reaction to the treatment. Profhilo is only based upon natural body acids and so does not contain any synthetic chemicals that may cause harm.

The only side effects reported to be common are the mild swelling bruising that could arise at the injection points. These symptoms normally disappear within a few days and should not be cause for alarm. Pain is can also evidently be experienced from the injection of the injection needle into your skin. But more often than not, your practitioner will typically apply numbing cream to reduce or prevent any pain at all.

However, with that being said, if you find that you are suffering from the following side effects, we strongly advise that you contact a health professional immediately to gain advice:

  • Discolouration of injection spots (e.g. pale or grey discolouration).
  • Red, pigmented skin.
  • Worsening swelling and bruising.
  • Severe growing pain.
  • General sickness such as nausea or dizziness etc.

How long does it take to work?:

Unlike dermal fillers, results from your first Profhilo experience may not be as immediate. In most cases, Profhilo is a 2-part treatment which are around 4 weeks apart. Full results are typically seen only after the second session as your skin would have produced enough collagen and elastin to give a firmer, smoother and plumper complexion.

How long does Profhilo last?:

The duration of Profhilo can vary between each individual. However, generally speaking, results can last up to roughly 6 months. It is also possible to have Profhilo treatments before and/or after botox or fillers. All these treatments are compatible and, when done correctly, can work well together to give the illusion of a more youthful and remodelled appearance.

Key Takeaways:

  • Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid-based treatment that corrects skin laxity and hydration.
  • It encourages the production of natural collagen and elastin through the process of bio-remodelling.
  • Hyaluronic acid is biocompatible so harmful side effects and allergic reactions are extremely rare.
  • Profhilo is usually a 2-part treatment and full results are typically seen only after the second session.
  • This treatment is temporary and results usually last up to 6 months.
